ABOUT

We work in close collaboration with our local schools, nurseries and families. We provide school sessions, youth groups, youth cooking and school holiday clubs. Our main focus is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our young people to express their creativity and play freely. Our Community Garden is the perfect environment for young people to learn and grow (along with the plants), gain new skills and most importantly have a great deal of fun in the process!

ACTIVITIES

Schools and nursery groups

We currently work with four local primary schools, providing each school with their own garden plot and holding gardening groups throughout the year. These groups allow local children to learn about food production and get hands-on experience of fruit and vegetable growing. Gardening sessions also teach children about wildlife and biodiversity through creative activities and observation.

After School Club

We currently run 2 after school clubs on a Wednesday and Thursday. The groups are children aged between 5-10 and they attend our 4 local primary schools. The club very much focuses on free-play allowing the children to explore the Garden and freedom to come up with their own ideas - from gardening, harvesting and cooking produce, arts and crafts, sports and visits to our local park.  In less favourable weather we have our rainbow pavilion which is a cosy summerhouse where the young people relax and have snacks.

Our young people experience a range of activities outdoors.

Our Garden offers young people the opportunity to play and learn in a safe environment. Children and young people at our Community garden go through the whole gardening season, firstly learning what can be planted, when and how. Then they design and plan what will be planted in their plots and raised beds, care for the plants, do weeding and watering and finally harvest and cook their produce. They can take their knowledge home and share it with their friends and family.

For details of when these groups meet, see our current timetable.

Garden After School Club
An After School Club suitable for 11-14 year olds which is situated in the Garden and our Outdoor classroom in the winter months. Come along for gardening, cooking, games and crafts. For more information, please contact 01382 802628

Youth Cook Group

Our Youth Cook Group runs every Tuesday. Children come to the group after school and are for children aged 10 - 15.

The children learn many skills in this group including preparing and cooking dishes. They learn how to work safely and hygienically, safe use of kitchen equipment such as knife skills, working safety around the stove and oven and working safely within the group.

The children are encouraged to bring ideas to the group with regards to what they would like to cook and how to go about making chosen dishes. We also grow and harvest produce from our garden to use in our recipes. We are a friendly informal group who love to try new ways of doing things.

The past year has given us new challenges and in order to continue our group through the pandemic we took our cooking outside. Through last summer we bought a barbeque and have been cooking up fabulous dishes including pizzas, nachos, baked potatoes and even cakes. A huge favourite was crispy barbequed kale straight from the garden. Even those who weren't keen on the bitterness of kale love it this way. We will continue to cook outside this year also as it was enjoyed by all, even in the rain.

PROJECTS

Winter Wonderland Garden Trail 2020

Have a look at our video and our latest blog post about this great event!

The Wonderful Winter Garden Trail was attended by a total of 216 different individuals and the overall feedback was overwhelmingly positive

Family Growing boxes

During lockdown in 2020, we distributed 300 growing kits to local families. We wanted to encourage families to grow their own fruit and vegetable, to be more creative in their garden or windowsill and spending time together.
